LulzBot TAZ 6 Aleph Objects’ new fused-deposition modeling 3-D printer boasts a print volume nearly the size of a basketball. Priced at $2,500, the 43-pound desktop unit is compatible with a number of materials, including polylactic acid, PC, HIPS and ABS, as well as specialty plastic filaments containing wood or metal. At its top speed, the dual-extruder-head printer can lay down filament at a rate of 7.9 inches per second. Multiple-material prints are possible with tool-head accessory upgrades.

What’s new? Self-leveling and self-cleaning features, which are new to the TAZ line. The new printer also has an enclosed and integrated power supply.

Benefits Extensibility and flexibility. Software for the LulzBot TAZ 6 is free, and the printer’s design is open source, so that it can be changed and updated freely by users. Created for a variety of applications, including prototyping and fabrication, the printer is intended to be easy to use and reliable.
